As soon as Nessa texts me, I step in. I was already at the market with a couple of my shifters. After Sorsha tipped me off about Dalton, I wasn’t about to leave Nessa unprotected in case that creep decided to go anywhere near her.

Until I can actually catch him in the act of doing something wrong, there isn’t much that I can do. We don’t have concrete evidence on him yet. But I am definitely going to keep an eye on the bastard. So, this morning I grabbed a couple of my shifters and set out to look for him and watch over Nessa, hoping that I could catch him in an act of malfeasance.

No one has seen him since the shooting, and I didn’t even notice him hiding in the corner of the market until I got Nessa’s texts. I was trying to keep my distance, so she didn’t think that I was following her. And I wasn’t going to jump in unless she needed me. I wasn’t trying to cramp her style; I simply wanted to make sure that she was safe.

As soon as I see Dalton, I’m furious that he is trying to come after Nessa again. I’m also very confused by it. Why her? Why not go for any of the other shifters in the city? If this creep really does know about the existence of shifters, then he would have a much easier time coming for literally any of the other shifters roaming around in full sight instead of trying to target the same woman twice. He can’t be so stupid as to think that market security hasn’t increased or that he wouldn’t be recognized or caught a second time, especially with his face in full view. Either this guy is really dumb, or he isn’t the mastermind behind the killings at all. It’s possible that he is just the grunt-man—the puppet with someone else pulling the strings. Whatever reason this guy has for targeting Nessa, I’m not going to let him get away with it.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” I ask, as I head straight up to the corner that he is slinking around in. I expect Dalton to shrink away or try to talk his way out of being back at the scene of the crime with some lame excuse, but he doesn’t. He doesn’t even try to act like he is hiding from me. Instead, he comes straight out with the truth.

“I’m watching Nessa,” he says as if he isn’t bothered by my presence there in the slightest. “And it’s none of your business what I do.”

“Oh, it’s totally my business,” I growl at him, trying to restrain myself from shifting right here and now and tearing him to pieces on the spot. “I know that it was you who shot at Nessa. I can’t believe you’ve got the balls to show up here again.”

“You can’t prove anything.”

He’s not wrong about that unfortunately. All that I have go on
